The Ambush - Holden House

As Union forces continued their advance into Marianna, they encountered a deadly surprise.

Confederate Home Guard defenders had taken positions on both sides of the street, creating an ambush for the approaching Union troops. The sudden attack wounded Union Brigadier General Alexander Asboth and nearly 30 of his men.

Across the street stood the Holden House, which was already here at the time of the battle and would have witnessed the fighting unfold just steps away.

The Union troops pressed forward, however, and the battle continued toward the heart of Marianna.
